Twig, een nieuw merk en een nieuw toestel met ingebouwd navigatiesysteem
Benefon bekend van toestellen met ingebouwde GPS ontvanger, maar dan voor de outdoor markt en speciale dienstensector heeft nu een product voor de mobiele markt gebracht, de Twig Discovery.
Het nieuwe toestel dat tijdens 3GSM getoond werd aan de wereld, is vooral bedoeld voor het aanbieden van een standaard navigatiemogelijkheid in een normaal toestel. Het gehele concept rond het nieuwe model is bedoeld als de ideale mix tussen de functionaliteiten van een navigatiesysteem en het gebruiken van het toestel als een telefoon.
De ingebouwde GPS ontvanger is een Sirf III ontvanger dat momenteel de standaard is. Verder krijgt men bij het toestel NavTech kaarten geleverd van de omgeving waarin men leeft. In het geval van Nederland zal dit de gehele Benelux worden. De kaarten zijn niet alleen huisnummer nauwkeurig, maar gaan nog veel verder. Hierdoor zijn de kaarten van de diverse landen qua afmeting (in MB's) wel enorm gegroeid, maar maakt het de Discovery wel vele malen nauwkeuriger dan huidige navigatiesystemen op mobiele toestellen.
Het toestel bezit een 256.000 kleuren scherm, waarop in 2D of 3D modus genavigeerd kan worden. De speciale Twig toets is bedoeld voor het terug vinden van het punt waarin ooit gestart is. Enorm handig wanneer men bijvoorbeeld de auto geparkeerd heeft in een stad waar men niet goed de weg weet. Een simpele druk op de knop en het toestel wijst de weg terug naar het beginpunt.
Bij het toestel worden een aantal services aangeboden. Deze bestaan uit drie onderdelen, namelijk:
- Twig Basic
- Twig Basic Plus
- Twig Advanced
Alle drie hebben deze hun eigen insteek. Twig Basic is vooral bedoeld voor het standaard navigeren, het bekijken van de huidige snelheid, het versturen van een Twig Alert via SMS of telefoongesprek en een database met nuttige plaatsen waarin men kan zoeken.
Twig Basic Plus heeft een Friend Finder aanboord die het mogelijk maakt andere personen met een Twig op te sporen en naar hem of haar toe te navigeren. Twig Zone en Tracker zijn andere onderdelen die tonen wanneer je vrienden of personen zich verplaatsen binnen een bepaalde omgeving. Dit kan erg handig zijn voor het beheer van bijvoorbeeld bedrijfswagens, maar men kan zo ook kijken of kinderen niet te ver van huis geraken (Al is het toestel wel wat te zwaar en te groot om mee te geven aan een kind).
Het derde onderdeel is Advanced en wil niks anders zeggen dan dat men de mogelijkheid heeft file informatie en flitspalen te downloaden. Twig City is bedoeld voor zaken mensen die veel reizen en bijvoorbeeld in een bepaalde stad snel de route willen weten. Deze wordt dan via een GPRS verbinding gedownload. Het laatste onderdeel van dit pakket is Twig SOS dat de mogelijkheid biedt een waarschuwingsbericht te versturen wanneer men de alarmtoets op de bovenkant van het toestel indrukt.
De keuze uit de pakketten ligt bij de klant. De verwachting is dat het toestel rond het tweede kwartaal dit jaar in de winkels zal liggen voor een prijs rond de 500 Euro. Het toestel heeft naast de GPS ontvanger een groot aantal standaard functionaliteiten die u bij het toestel terug kan vinden.
